Mace Windu was a more powerful Jedi than Yoda

How powerful was Mace Windu? Was he stronger than Yoda?

Not many people have realised that Mace Windu was a more powerful Jedi that Yoda.

How so?

This can't be true. Yoda was a bad ass - we saw him take on Count Dooku and the Emperor!

And that is true, Yoda fought Dooku in Attack of the Clones and fought an epic saber duel against Palpatine himself.

But Yoda did not beat Palpatine.

Who did beat the Palpatine?

Mace Windu did. He beat him fear and square. It was only the naive intervention of Anakin Skywalker that allowed the Emperor a literal window of opportunity to send Mace out the window to his presumed death.

I'd thus contend that by virtue of Yoda being unable to defeat the Sith Lord and that Mace managed to defeat him, Mace Windu was a more powerful Jedi than Yoda.

It's arguable of course, there are many other attributes of being a Jedi that can be defined as powerful - however if you want to boil it down, Jedi are knights and how are knights ultimately judged?

By their swordsman ship.

Which raises an interesting point. In the novelisation of Revenge of the Sith, Windu suggests to Kenobi that Kenobi is the better swordsman, thus making him the most powerful Jedi!

Who is Mon Mothma? What was that famous quote about Bothans? Was she really in Revenge of the Sith or did I miss something?

Tell me really quickly, who is Mon Mothma? What is she doing in Rogue One?

Caroline Blakiston as Mon Mothma in Return of the Jedi
Caroline Blakiston as Mon

At the time of Revenge of the Sith, she was the  leader of the Galactic Senate's Loyalist faction and vehemently opposed Supreme Chancellor Palpatine's policies during the final days of the Republic. Working in secrecy, she helped found the Rebel Alliance, and then served as its civilian leader during the long war against the Evil Empire.

In Rogue One, she continue to serve as a leader of the Rebel Alliance.

What's the deal in terms of the films?

Mon Mothma's character was created specicially for Return of the Jedi. She was played by English Actress Caroline Blakiston who had previously built up a large body of television credits.

Mon Mothma is regularly cited by people as being the only female character with lines in Star Wars movies - this is not actually true - everyone always forgets dear Aunt Beru! (Lucas did try to get some female X Wing pilots into Jedi but left them on the cutting room floor).

In a manner similar to how Admiral Ackbar gained a certain element of popularity, Mon Mothma also had quite the fan base and the character has been featured heavily in the expanded Star Wars canon. Her popularity was further cemented by having the character have a presence in Revenge of the Sith - though the scenes where she spoke were actually cut!

On that occasion, Genevieve O'Reilly took the part. Here's a deleted scene of Mon discussing the politics of the Chancellor and the actions they may take to counter his influence in the Senate with other politicians, notably Bail Organa and Padme.

You can see another scene with Mothma here.

Rogue One

This 4th Star Wars prequel features the return of Mon Mothma, again played by O'Reilly. The beauty of the casting is that as its been over 10 years since she played Mon in Revenge of the Sith, she has aged just as the character would have so she looks the part.

Quotes from Jedi

Given Mon Mothma had only one short scene, here's her two lines. Let's start with Mon Mothma's most famous quote that came from Return of the Jedi:

"Many Bothans died to bring us this information."

People use this line all the time to preface the delivery of some kind of information. Usually it's Star Wars related! People have also confused this line with the delivery of the Death Star plans in A New Hope.

"The Emperor's made a critical error, and the time for our attack has come"

Well, in the end she was right but the Emperor had a whole plan in motion to lure out Luke and to destroy the Rebels so when she said it, she was kinda wrong....

Rogue One quotes by Mon Mothma

"We have intercepted an Imperial coded transmission."

"We’ve a mission for you. A major weapons test is imminent and we need to know what it is and how to destroy it."

What does Blakiston think about her Star Wars legacy?

Here's a choice quote from the actress about the role:

"Certainly people are always very envious of me. When I join a new theater company, the other actors look down the program, see my Return of the Jedi credit and say, 'Oh, you were part of Star Wars.' I smile and say, 'Yes, but only for twenty-six and a half seconds.'"

Why did Darth Vader turn to the dark side of the Force?

How did Darth Vader fall to the dark side of the Force?

A New Hope opened with an thrilling assault on a rebel ship and as the Storm troopers gained access, Darth Vader famously stepped in, his black figure large and menacing.

Since that moment fans have wondered who this Vader guy was and how he came to be.

The original trilogy films added small iterations to the back story of Vader but it was a back story we hardly knew much of.  ANH told us he was a pupil of Ob Wan Kenobi, seduced by the dark side who killed Luke's father.

Empire later revealed Vader was Luke's father and Jedi confirmed he was indeed the chosen one but the full back story of who Vader really was and how he had ended up as the most feared person on the galaxy was never explored.

Enter the prequel trilogies.

In a weird kind of way you could think of Darth Vader as having a similar plight as King Kong for it were beauty that bring down the beast.

What do we mean by that?

Vader was once Anakin Skywalker, a powerful Jedi Knight who fell in love with Padmé and it was his love for her that was ultimately his undoing.

Anakin had a vision that plagued him of Padmé dying and he wished to prevent that - when this was made known to Palpatine, the then undercover Sith Lord seized an opportunity to use that need to finally turn Anakin against the Jedi and so succeed in his goal of gaining ultimate power.

While Anakin motives for his actions in Revenge of the Sith were initially pure, his fear and anger lead to the Dark Side (as Yoda predicted).

Following his final encounter with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustapha were he was left for dead and having fatally wounded Padmé (or possibly simply caused her to lose her will to live) - Vader had no choice but to continue the path set before him by his seduction by the Sith Lord.

He then set about furthering the Emperor's rule by seeking out and exterminating the remaining Jedi. By the time that 'work' was finished Vader was wholly a part of the dark side of the Forcw.

Vader's story came to an end in Return of the Jedi where he killed the Emperor out of love for his son Luke thus fulfilling the so called prophecy that he would bring balance to the Force. He had come from the darkest of places so that his son may live and not also be turned or killed by Palpatine.

Is it me or is this X-Wing pilot kind of hot? I find the green quite fetching....
Did you know the production of Return of the Jedi filmed female pilots attacking the Death Star but they were left cut out of the film on the editing room floor?

Me neither till I spied this picture on the internet. Check her out being tailed by that TIE Interceptor - looks like the shield is still up! (Actually is this really an X-Wing, I think it's an A-Wing). But alas, this scene was cut from the Rebels assault on the Death Star.

Vivienne Chandler was filmed as an X-Wing pilot for Jedi were she had a 'full page and a half of dialogue' in a cockpit set. She reckons she actually went to a screening of the film that included her scenes, and then when it was actually released to the public, she was on the cutting room floor. Gone.

Including this rather motherly looking lady:

7 things about the most tragic figure in Star Wars, Darth Vader

7 things you may not know about Darth Vader, the most tragic figure in Star Wars

  1. Darth Vader has only 12 minutes of screen time!
  2. Vader’s famous heaving breathing sounds were recorded by Ben Burt whilst he breathed into an aqualung.
  3. In the original drafts of Star Wars, Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker were definitely different people - it wasn’t until the development of the Empire treatment that the two were combined as one character. People still argue to this day that Lucas always knew Vader was Luke's father!
  4. During the finale of Return of the Jedi have a careful listen when Darth Vader picks up the Emperor and throws him down the Death Star shaft. This is the only occasion when you’ll hear Jedi theme music playing when Vader is on screen. This reflects his return to the light side of the Force.
  5. Despite his reputation for killing many people and being one of the biggest bad asses in the galaxy, Vader had the most limbs severed from his person in the film series!
  6. James Earl Jones was the voice of Vader but fans probably didn’t know that during the original screenings of the film as his name wasn’t included in the credits as it is today. This is apparently because he didn’t want his name to be associated with a film that he thought was going to be a flop.
  7. Lord Vader’s famous leitmotif theme music is known as The Imperial March and was not introduced until Empire Strikes Back.

I know.
This page is a chance to talk about some triva about Han Solo and some facts about Harrison Ford but let's get this out of the bloody way:

HAN SHOT FIRST.

And that's all this article about how freaking cool Han Solo is will say about that matter.

But here are plenty of things cover about one of the greatest Space Pirates ever.
  • Harrison Ford famously was never intended to be Han Solo, he was just hanging around after American Graffitti and was helping other actors read their lines as Lucas was in the casting process. Eventually Lucas wised up and realised Harrison already had the part down cold.
  • In Empire Strikes Back, Ford ad-libbed his line "I know" in response to Leia's "I love you". It's become one of cinema's most famous quotes. People say it to each other all the time, 30 years later.
  • Ford's ex-wife, Melissa Mathison, wrote the script for the Speilberg film "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial".
  • Carrie Fisher had to stand on a box for most of her scenes with Harrison in the original Star Wars films because she is a foot shorter than him. This was done so the actors would look better in the frame shot together.
  • Awesome quote "Great kid, now don't get cocky"
  • In the very short lived T.V. show Firefly, a model version of Han Solo frozen in carbonite can be seen in many places - the props department would move it around as a running gag. Presumably this was kind of like how Superman appeared in every episode of Seinfeld.
  • Harrison is the only actor to have appeared in films directed by all three of these directors: Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola
  • Han Solo grabs Princess Leia’s breasts during the Battle of Endor...
  • The award Han and Luke receive at the end of Star Wars is called the Alderaanian Medal of Freedom. Which is nice as they are on the planet Yavin.... (because they can't be on Alderaan. Which makes me wonder where they got enough official medals from...).
  • Han came into ownership of the Millennium Falcon by beating Lando Calrissian in a game of Sabac. That's how they knew each other before the audience first sees them greet each other in Empire. The Han Solo solo movie shows how they actually met.
  • Here's how Han and Chewbacca met.
  • Another awesome quote: Never tell me the odds!
  • In the original trilogy, Han Solo is the only non Jedi to wield a light saber sword. Refer to the scene during Empire when Han slices open a taun taun to place Luke within. Which allows us to share this snarky quote Han delivered at the time: "...and I thought they smelled bad on the outside!"
  • George Lucas had originally envisioned Han Solo to be a huge green-skinned monster with no nose and gills. Not happy with this Lucas changed the idea of Han Solo to a black human. He auditioned several black actors and Billy Dee Williams shuffled through for an audition. Ultimately Han Solo was cast as a white Harrison Ford but not before James Caan, Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro and Burt Reynolds had all turned down the part. That green guy we mentioned? We guess he became Greedo.
You know, the guy that shot second.

Why did Leia lead the Empire to the Rebel Fleet hidden on Yavin IV?

We wonder if the most popular question asked about Star Wars is why do Storm Troopers always miss then is the second most popular question why did Princess Leia leave the Empire to Yavin IV and thus the location of the rebel fleet?

    What is the answer anyway?

The short answer is Leia bet the farm on taking down the Death Star.

With the knowledge that they had found a weakness in the structure of the planet killer, it was time to play and she was prepared to put the entire Rebel fleet at risk to do it.

Once the planet Alderaan was destroyed Leia realised that the Empire was in a massive new position of power.

There was nothing left to lose now that the Emperor had the power of the Death Star at his disposal. There would be no more negotiations with dissenting planets - any one who stood in the Empire's way could be obliterated.

Basically it was now or never and so Leia deliberately let Han Solo drive the Falcon to Yavin IV in the knowledge she and her rescuers had been allowed to escape (which explains why the Storm Troopers missed all their shots).

She knew Tarkin and Vader would have a plan and she was correct in that the Falcon had been bugged. Recall Leia says to her rescuers "They let us escape".

It was thus a game of I know you know with Tarkin.

One which ultimately cost Tarkin his life.

George Lucas not only re invented movie making, he heavily promoted metal recycling...

Did you know that the bounty hunter droid IG-88, who was briefly scene in The Empire Strikes Back, was built with recycled shooting accessories from A New Hope?

IG88 was recycled from the Mos Eisley Cantina

IG-88's head was created from one of the beverage dispensers that can be seen in the cantina of Star War's A New Hope!

While IG-88 was only briefly seen in Empire, it was enough for him to feature in a short story written by Kevin J. Anderson called Therefore I am: The Tale of IG-88.

It's a very clever yarn that's woven around the events of Empire and Jedi.

10 strange facts and oddities about Star Wars

Star Wars has become a huge beast of a franchise and over 6 movies some strange things have cropped up as part of each films production. Here's a wee list.

    1. The wise wizard Gandalf from Lord of the Rings was a huge influence on the character of Obi Wan Kenobi - so much so that an early draft of the Star Wars script featured lines cribbed directly from the pages of Tolkien!
    2. Peter Cushing filmed all his scenes as Grand Moff Tarkin wearing slippers!
    3. Denis Lawson who famously played X-Wing pilot Wedge is the real life uncle of Ewan McGregor who played Obi Wan Kenobi in the prequel films!
    4. The plot twist reveal of the father and son relationship between Vader and Luke in The Empire Strikes Back is often misquoted as "Luke, I am your father". The line is actually "No, I am your father". No one knows why people do this!
    5. In Jedi, the green Twilek Oola has a nipple slip and George Lucas left it in. Maybe the Rancor was supposed to distract us?
    6. Despite being one of the most famous and well known villains in the history of movie making, Darth Vader actually has only 12 minutes of screen time in A New Hope! That's four minutes less than the screen time of Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs - and Anthony Hopkins got an Oscar for the part! What an impact Vader has had.
    7. The reason the little green guy Yoda returned as a character to Return of the Jedi was there was some concern about whether Vader was really Luke's father. After consultation with child psychologists about how Vader's claim could be perceived by younger children who then went on to watch Jedi, George Lucas decide he needed an independent character to confirm Darth Vader's claim that he is Luke Skywalker's father. Which was awesome for everyone as we all love Yoda! And his reasoning was sound.
    8. You know that awesome pod racer race in The Phantom Menace? Yep, Lucas was just copying the famous chariot race from Ben Hur.
    9. Lucas was actually quite good at stealing good ideas. You know that bit where Obi Wan feels the death of the people on the planet Alderaan? Lucas just took that from a Star Trek episode where Spock felt the death of 400 of his own Vulcan kind.
    10. David Lynch was offered the chance to direct Return of the Jedi but turned it down. Can you imagine how crazy Jedi could have turned out if Lynch had cast his magic over the film? Lynch actually chose Dune as his next film, and while it wasn't an universally accepted film, it has gone on to earn its own unique place in film history as a really interesting sci-fi movie. It was also probably just as well that Sting didn't have a role in Jedi either.....

Just how influenced by Star Wars was Guardians of the Galaxy?

    $
    0
    0
guardians of the galaxy star wars themed posterNow that the hype and dust of Guardians of the Galaxy has settled somewhat, we can take the time reflect on just how good a movie it was and wonder why that might be.

Is it because it felt like Star Wars?

For this writer, it may have been the best fun he’s had at the movies since he saw Roger Rabbit or Return of the Jedi as a child so maybe there is something there.

Before we go through the Star Wars influences on Guardians, we should note the first comic form of Guardians of the Galaxy was published in 1969, some 8 years before Star Wars hit the silver screen.

So this piece of writing is about how the Star Wars films influenced the Guardians movie and is not a discussion about what came first.

To clear up any doubt about whether the influences are real or just imagined by rabid Star Wars fans, the film’s director James Gunn was quoted as saying:

“This was intentionally my version of Star Wars. When I was first considering doing the movie, the chance to make something like that was one of the things that got me on board. Not just Star Wars, but Raiders Of The Lost Ark, and other movies like that. The stuff I loved as a kid. I wanted to make a movie that made people feel the way they made me feel.”

Here's some of the express influence Star Wars had over GOTG

    • The duo of Groot and Rocket Racoon pretty much stole Guardians from Star Lord. They were very funny did some cool things and they had a great personal relationship. Did you notice how Rocket translated everything Groot said for their fellow Guardians? That’s unmistakably a Han Solo and Chewbacca type friendship right there. Han spends a lot of the Star Wars films sharing what Chewie thought or responding. C3PO totally does with R2D2 so this would seem an obvious Star Wars influence on GoG.
    • While Peter Quill (Star Lord) is arguably of the Han Solo mold, Groot is effectively Rocket’s version of Chewbacca. How is Quill like Han Solo? How about his quips for every situation he’s in and his sexual tension chemistry with Gamora mirrors Solo and Leias and he turns out to be a hero after struggling a bit.
    • Evil Fathers. As Luke and Leia had Vader as their evil father, sisters Gamora and Nebula had the world conquering Thanos as their adopted father.
    • There's a puppet master pulling strings. Ronan the Destroyer takes the part of Vader in this film and like Vader serving the Emperor, Ronan served Thanos.
    • Thanos even kills an underling who annoyed him which mirrors Vader’s force choke moves.
    • George Lucas also managed to have a random influence on the post credits seen – Howard the Duck makes an amusing appearance. While Howard is a Marvel product, it was Lucas who directed the movie version. You could argue that a lot people (such as myself) would only have known who Howard was from having seen the movie (as a child, many years ago!).
So Guardians is not exactly a copy of Star Wars it certainly has been influenced by it.

This is not to say that Guardians was not influenced by other things as well. The movie has a multitude of references to icons of the 1980s such as Troll Dolls and Alyssa Milano.

Star Lord is also arguably based on Indiana Jones (which was based on a million of other things but is actually another Lucas influence). At one point Quill even makes a passing reference to the Ark from Raiders.

It's nice to see Star Wars and George Lucas having an impact on movie making in a great way - it's returning the favour after all...

Peter Mayhew filming Hoth scenes in The Empire Strikes Back

All the facts you need to know about Chewbacca and Peter Mayhew

He's the tallest fuzz ball in the galaxy that's far far away, he's Chewbacca.

    Or Peter Mayhew.

    Or Chewie.

    Or the giant walking carpet.

Either way everyone loves Han Solo's most loyal friend and also the actor who plays the big goof is loved by millions of Star Wars fans around the world.

Here's a few facts and figures about Chewbacca & how Pete got to play the role of a life time.
    • Muscle man David Prowse was considered to play Chewbacca but eventually get got to play Vader as he wanted to play a villain. This meant George Lucas had to a search for a suitable replacement and the rest is history for Peter. A movie producer saw the article and cast him—in an uncredited role—as Minoton the minotaur in the film Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger. One of the makeup men on Sinbad was later working on the Wookiee costume with Stuart Freeborn and suggested to the producers that they screen-test Mayhew.
    • Legend has it then when Peter Mayhew stood up to meet Lucas for the first time, Lucas knew that because of his great height, he would be a great Chewie.
    • Chewbacca has appeared in four of the Star Wars movies.
    • Mayhew's height is seven-foot, three-inch height.
      Chewbacca playing chess with R2D2
      Let the wookie win!
    • "I think I just ran over a Wookiee on the expressway." This was an ad libbed line that game from the Lucas film THX-1138. It stuck with Lucas and it became Chewbacca's species.
    • Peter suffered from Marfan Syndrome.
    • Chewbacca's distinctive growl is an amalgam of animal noises. Ben Burtt created it by mixing noises from walruses, bears, tigers, camels and badgers.
    • In Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Chewbacca is 200 years old. This is a handy trick which allowed Chewbacca to make a brief appearance in Revenge of the Sith. He defends his home planet Kasshyyk with his army and the help of Yoda.
    • Here's some sweet Chewbacca quotes.
    • Chewbacca's costume was made with a combination of real yak and rabbit hair knitted into a base of mohair.
    • They killed Chewbacca in the books by dropping a moon on his head but now that the books are no longer cannon Chewbacca lives!
    • Chewbacca’s character design was based on concept art drawn by Ralph McQuarrie. Lucas had originally given McQuarrie a photo of a lemur for inspiration, and McQuarrie proceeded to draw the character as a female—but Chewbacca was soon changed to a male. McQuarrie based his furry design on an illustration by artist John Schoenherr that was commissioned for Game of Thrones scribe George R.R. Martin’s short story “And Seven Times Never Kill a Man.” Yes, the George R.R. Martin that went on to write the Game of Thrones novels.
    • Before he got famous doing Star Wars, Peter Mayhew was employed as a deputy head porter in a London hospital.
    • Peter Mayhew has issues with his knees and would have struggled with the rigours of film Chewie's part in The Force Awakens. So the role was double teamed with fellow giant, Joonas Suotamo. The quick way to tell which actor is doing what is that if Chewbacca is sitting, it's probably Peter and if it's an action shot, it's more than likely to be Joonas.

What Oscars did Star Wars win?

You don't think of Star Wars films as being Academy Award winners but they are.

When Star Wars was released in 1977 it was not just the movie goers that loved it, the critical reception was positive so when it came to Oscar seasons, Star Wars actually got 10 nominations and won 7.

George Lucas got a director's gong nod and Alec Guiness famously got a best supporting actor's nomination for his efforts as the fatherly Obi Wan Kenobi.

Star Wars: A New Hope won Oscars for:
    • Best Art Direction-Set Decoration
    • Best Costume Design
    • Best Sound
    • Best Film Editing
    • Best Effects, Visual Effects
    • Best Music, Original Score
So Star Wars: A New Hope won 6 Oscars.

A key fact is that the person who the gong for Film editing, was George Lucas's wife, Marcia Lucas.

By the time Empire rolled around, Lucas and film director Irvine Kershner had some issues with the Directors Guild of America so it would seem these issues contributed to a lack of nominations, or perhaps the business had got over the sensation of Star Wars and were not so star struck.
    • Empire Strikes back won a gong for Best Sound.
    • Jedi won a special achievement award for Visual Effects.
    • The prequel trilogies had various nominations but won none.
While the awards dried up, the innovations that Lucasfilm came up with during production had a long and lasting affect on Hollywood and paved the way for many other movie makers which is probably the most rewarding thing for Lucas.

So in total Star Wars movies have one 8 Oscars, 7 being real ones.

    Luke killing Darth Vader
Keep your filthy hands off my sister!

How close to the dark side of the Force did Luke Skywalker actually get?

In ANH, Luke starts out as a farm boy, realises he’s in a war with his own father and suddenly is the last hope for freedom.

It’s a tough gig and by the time Jedi rolls around some four years after Luke followed a crazy old man on an adventure, Luke has changed considerably.

He is no longer the blue eyed dreamer, he’s well on his way to become a Jedi, he is, the new man in black.

    Roll over Johnny Cash.

And being The Man in Black means he’s skirting the line, getting too close to the dark side of the Force.

That place where Vader went and look what happened.

    Millions died.

So what evidence is there that Luke was bordering the dark side of the Force?

Jedi builds this up very slowly, and quite carefully.

First up is Luke’s entrance to the Palace. He begins his rescue by force chocking two hapless Gamorrean guards in a manner that his father would be proud of.

He then mockingly commences negotiations with Jabba the Hutt and despite nearly having the tables turned on him by way of the Rancor, he warns Jabba 'that's the last mistake you'll ever make'.

That's a death threat if I ever heard one.

I hadn't realised Jedi did such things?

At the very least it's a sign of cockiness, something I believe Han Solo warned him about some four years ago in A New Hope.

Following a mad cap orgy of blood letting at the hand of Luke's saber, Luke having pretty much already effected the rescue, he fires the cannon into Jabba's Sail Barge killing everybody but his pals.

     Everybody but his pals.

He didn't have to kill them, he could have just swung himself and Leia onto their escape ship, but no, he killed them all. Kind of like how Anakin dealt mercilessly to those who kidnapped his mother.

    Dark side much?

One could perhaps argue that in getting rid of Jabba, Luke was actually helping the people of Tattoinne become free of the crime lord's family and the long shadow it had cast over the planet.

But I think that's being too free with Lucas' intentions with the script.

And let's not forget the fact that Luke is wearing black costuming for most of the film. He is literally now a man in black.  He arrives at Jabba's Palace in a dark Jedi like robe which when discarded in the Rancor attack reveals a suit of black.

Or more correctly, a suit of black death!

On Endor, Luke is wearing another black costume and wears this when he confronts Vader in front of the cackling confident Emperor. Vader is all in black too as the color is the universal symbol for villainy and so the comparison must be made - Luke is getting close to the dark side and his costume is intended to help the viewer believe this may be the case.

Let's cut to the climatic saber battle between Luke and Vader, during it Leia is shot on Endor and Luke feels her pain through the force and unwillingly reveals her existence as being Vader's taught, a fact which the Sith Lord seizes on and threatens to turn her to the Dark Side.

And, that is a bridge too far for Luke, he loses his shit at Vader.

Gone is the formal Jedi restraint, he just goes for it and beats Vader by tapping into his anger. He deals Vader a mortal blow and suddenly that moment is make or break for Skywalker.

Of course Luke chooses light over dark but he was *THIS* close when he made his final fatal attack. The difference was that he was not Vader, he was Luke Skywalker, son of Anakin Skywalker, a Jedi Knight.

Lucas then served us with a nice twist of sorts however.

Take a closer look at Luke's costume. Look at the fold across the chest that is now unbuttoned, what is that colour?

It's white. It's the yang to black's yin.

Underneath all Luke's stresses doubts and struggles with who his father was and who HE was, he was always the good guy. Always the Knight in White Satin.

Always the boy who never got to Tosche Station to get his power converters.

This is a movie after all and he was a Jedi, like his Father was before him. Nice symbolism Lucas.

So yes, Luke got pretty close to turning to the Dark Side, but his heroic qualities shone through and after all of that with Vader, he regained his zen and stuck it to the Emperor telling him that he was a Jedi like his Father was before him.

It was a fearless moment one which nearly cost him life when he was zapped by Force lightning.

But we all know how that turned out....

Richard Marquand Cameo return of the jedi
Could this be the director of Return of the Jedi taking part in the Battle of Endor?

Star Wars has plenty of cameos by famous people and by people that got famous due to Star Wars!

You just need to know where to look.

The Star Wars films are full of cameo moments by people related to the films in some way.

Whether they were the son of a certain director, a certain director himself or an actor famous for wearing a golden suit or short fella known for his role as Wicket in Jedi, there's been plenty of fun had amongst the casting of many faces in the films.

Here's the list of cameo spots in Star Wars but bear in mind that it is not all inclusive, it features only the cameos of fairly well known persons - there are many cameos by production staff and friends of the Lucas realm that are not included.

    Prequel films cameo appearances:

    The Phantom Menace
Warwick Davis as Weazel in Phantom Menace
Davis on the right of Watto.
    • Warwick Davis who is famous for playing Wicket made a turn as Weazel. He's actually appeared in Star Wars many times.
    • Sound man Ben Burt turned up as a noble man.
    • Francis Ford Coppola's daughter Sofia turned up as one of Padme's aides. Sofia went on to win an Academy Award for her script for Lost in Translation.
    Attack of the Clones
    • Think back to Attack of Clones where Obi Wan and Anakin chase Padme's would be assassin to the bar. After Obi Wan strikes with his light saber a white haired man is shown. This is none other than Anthony Daniels, that actor who plays C3PO. Oh my! Ahmed Best is in the scene too but best not to mention that too loudly in case the Jar Jar haters are listening
    Revenge of the Sith
    • George Lucas famously turned up dressed in blue.
    • Anthony Daniels did a cameo as a solider called Dannl Faytonni
    • Jeremy Bulloch who is a very popular element of Boba Fett did a fairly genuine cameo as Jeremoch Colton, the captain of the Sundered Heart.
    • Jett 'son of George' Lucas has a small but cool role as a young Padawan who attempts to get to Bail Organa but is killed by the Storm Troopers.
    Original Trilogy Cameo Appearances:

    A New Hope
    • This was the first film so there was not a real tendency to cast people in the know by way of self referential cameos. Except for one. Joe Johnston donned a Storm Trooper costume for a couple of scenes. Johnston of course was responsible for designing the Tie Fighter and other space ships for the film. He went on to become a fairly good director in his own right most notably Captain America.
    The Empire Strikes Back

    • Ralph McQuarrie, the famed designer of the look of the Star Wars universe has a brief cameo in Empire during the Hoff base opening events.
    • That chap to which Han Solo retorts, "Then I'll see you in Hell!" just before he heads out into the dark knight to find a certain missing Jedi? That's Cliff Clavin from Cheers AKA John Ratzenberger. Hey Norm!
    • That's Ralph with the folder. Good folder holding Ralph!
    • While Jeremy Bulloch is known for playing Boba Fett, he had a small role as an Imperial Officer in Empire Strikes Back - he's the one escorting Leia once she has been captured by Vader. Whether this counts as a cameo or he was just filling in, I'm not sure because he wasn't 'famous' still after the film came out.
    Return of the Jedi
    • The film's director Richard Marquand had a go piloting an AT-AS walker in Return of the Jedi.
    • Marquand also did the voice of the robot EV9D9 on Jabba's sail barge - he's the one who gives R2D2 and C3PO their jobs.
    The Force Awakens

The list is too long to go here, so check the cameo list here!

Was LOTR's Gandalf Lucas's inspiration for Obi-Wan Kenobi?

It is a burden he should never have had to bear...

When asked about the inspirations for Star Wars, fans would probably be quick to come up with Flash Gordon, Edgar Rice Burroughs, The Hidden Fortress or John Wayne’s The Searchers.

But not so many would come up with Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings.

But this guy did and makes a good point about this piece of Tolkien prose:

"What do you mean, ‘good morning’? Do you mean that it is a good morning for you, or do you wish me a good morning, although it is obvious I’m not having one, or do you find that mornings in general are good”

Actually that’s not the writing of Tolkien.

It’s from scene 39 of George Lucas’ third draft of Star Wars. Yes, George had paraphrased something Gandalf said for Obi Wan Kenobi.

    Here's the original:

“What do you mean?“ he said. ”Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?"

Lucas cut Obi Wan's question to Luke from his draft as perhaps he had used it for inspiration and couldn't make it work.

Or it was too close to the original text. Either way, Tolkien was at least a small part of what went through Lucas’s mind as he drafted his space opera.

But is Gandalf really the inspiration for Obi Wan?

    And by extension the Jedi?

    Yes and No.

Kitbashed notes, “That Gandalf and Obi-Wan share traits is perhaps better written off to the fact that both draw on the stereotypical wizard of fairytales and fantasy. Granted, Tolkien planted the seed for all modern fantasy with The Lord of the Rings, and so Gandalf is in many ways the stereotypical wizard because he was the first wizard; but he himself was based in large part on Merlin of the Arthurian legends.”

And given that Lucas was mostly inspired by stories and characters found in film and television mediums, it would seem unlikely that Gandalf was a direct inspiration, especially as Lucas took the loose concept of Jedi (Jedarks) and Sith from Edgar Rice Burroughs so he was no stranger to borrowing from strong source material.

Plot points you may have missed in the Star Wars movies

I came across this pretty cool factoid about Star Wars the other day, that being the scruffy nerfherder called Han Solo is the only non-Jedi to use a lightsaber in the entire Original Trilogy of Star Wars

That is the moment on Hoth when he uses Luke’s saber to slice open the guts of Luke’s recently dead Taun-taun. I thought it was pretty cool and mused that that was something every Star Wars fan NEEDs to know.

If you've seen Star Wars a million times before, you may have picked this up – but it got me wondering as well, what other completely obvious things have fans missed even though those things have been staring them in the face since the movies first hit the silver screen? (Are screens still silver? – Ed)
    • So, we’ve covered off the Han thing – how about something from Jedi - the word Ewok is never mentioned in Return of the Jedi at all!
    • Luke Skywalker is irrelevant to the last half of the movie. If you think about it, in terms of destroying the Empire, Luke didn’t need to be on the Death Star as Lando Calrissian had that covered – the Emperor and Vader operating as two Sith Lords working in tandem to rule the Galaxy would have been destroyed when Lando blew up the Death Star. Right? *
    • Grand Moff Tarkin plays a very small cameo in Revenge of the Sith. He steps out from side to confer with the Emperor and Vader.
    • In a New Hope, Leia was kept captive on the Death Star in cell number 2187. This was a deliberate choice as 2187 is the year that the Lucas directed film THX 1138, was set.
    • Several E.T. like creatures are found in The Phantom Menace. Guess someone managed to phone home? It was a kind of pay back to his good friend Steven Speilberg who put Yoda in E.T and some other Star Wars references.
    • In Jedi, listen very carefully as Darth Vader picks up the Emperor and throws him down the Death Star shaft. This is the only time the Jedi theme music plays over a shot of Vader, reflecting his return to the light side of the Force.
    • R2D2’s height is 96cm tall.
    • Vader was actually the only Star Wars film character to lose an arm three times! And both his legs as well. Obi Wan Kenobi got 3 of his limbs in Revenge of the Sith!
    • The Bantha milk drank by Luke and Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru in A New Hope is blue!
    • Chewbacca doesn't say a word of English...
Well, to be fair some of these points were not hugely obvious (don’t force choke us!) but they were pretty cool none-the-less. Were there any we missed or where they too subtle?

    * The counter to this claim is of course that Luke cut off Vader's hand and realizes he's tapped into the dark side of the Force and is about to become what his father was. His refusal to join the dark side enrages the Emperor so that he decides to kill Luke. Fearing his son was about to die, Vader then fulfilled the prophecy of him being the Chosen One by killing the Emperor thus restoring balance to the Force.

IF Luke had not fought Vader in this manner, it is reasonable to argue that Vader and more likely the Emperor would not have been distracted and would have focused their efforts on the Rebel assault on the Death Star and wiped them out using the armada of Star Destroyers that were waiting on the periphery of the battle.

Thus meaning Luke was actually central to the plot of Return of the Jedi. Suck it nerf herders!

A caution about Darth Vader’s role in Rogue One

How long is Vader's screen time in Rogue One?

It’s no secret that Darth Vader is making a return to Star Wars with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

We caution though, that the movie is not about him and he that will have minimal screen time.

If you think he is going to be running around taking Jyn’s band of merry Rogues out one-by-one with his blazing red saber, you’ve got your head in the Cloud City.

The bad guy of Rogue One is Director Orsen Krennic

The trailers have made this very clear, as has the prequel novel to R1, Catalyst, Krennic is responsible for breaking up the Erso family and the movie explores the echoes of that moment when Galen Erso was taken by Krennic to build the Death Star.

So back to Vader. He is in the movie to add some plot and give weight to the menance of Krennic and to frankly help sell the movie.

Star Wars fans are going to buy tickets to see a Star Wars movie regardless of who is in it. Mom and Dad type movie goers will go and see Darth Vader.

Vader is Disney’s cash cow and this is quite possibly the last time for a fair while that they will be able to plug Darth Vader into a movie (flash backs and more prequels aside).

If you recall the film Silence of the Lambs, the bad guy Hannibal Lecter is in the movie on screen for only something like 12 minutes. That was enough time for Anthony Hopkins to win the Best Actor Academy Award. Darth Vader had the same kind of affect in A New Hope. He became infamous all around the world as a bad guy and he was only on screen for 12 minutes as well.

We are picking Vader will have even less time in Rogue One and we suspect he won’t even get his sabre into his hands (though a brief show down with Jyn right at the end would be awesome).

So, if you think Vader is going to have a big role in Rogue One you will be setting yourself up for disappointment. Knowing that he has a small role (but one that could totally steal the movie) you will likely enjoy the movie better.

Luke Skywalker always took his bath time very seriously...

27 random as Star Wars facts that you might not know

Here's some random as nuggets of triva and facts about the Star Wars movies. As the legend and lore of Lucas's world grows, these factoids become even more awesome!

      1. In a New Hope, Leia was kept captive on the Death Star in cell number 2187. This was a deliberate choice as 2187 is the year that the Lucas directed film THX 1138, was set.
      2. In Return of the Jedi, listen to the music very carefully as Darth Vader picks up the Emperor and throws him down the Death Star shaft. This is the only time the Jedi theme music plays over a shot of Vader, reflecting his return to the light side of the Force and him actually being the Chosen One.
      3. Darth Vader was actually the only Star Wars film character to lose an arm three times! And both his legs as well. Obi Wan Kenobi got 3 of his limbs in Revenge of the Sith! He did have the higher ground after all...
      4. The Bantha milk drank by Luke and Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru in A New Hope is blue! It's become the stuff of Star Wars legend. I never noticed the colour until I was an adult with a mortgage!
      5. Anakin Skywalker really is the ‘Chosen one’. While Yoda and Obi Wan may have thought a mistake had been made in the reading of the prophecy, Anakin was the one who actually killed Sith Lord Palpatine by throwing him down the Death Star’s reactor shaft in Jedi and thus restored balance to the Force.
      6. Harrison Ford famously was never intended to be Han Solo, he was just hanging around after American Graffitti and was helping other actors read their lines as Lucas was in the casting process. Eventually Lucas wised up and realised Harrison already had the part down cold.
      7. Princess Leia was subject to one of the most famous ad libs in cinema history - that being Han Solo's response to her declaration of love - "I know". Harrison Ford apparently made it up at Irvine Kershner's suggestion. Leia got to return the line in Return of Jedi during the Battle of Endor.
      8. Carrie Fisher appeared in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. This movie was a weird Kevin Smith homage to Star Wars and featured an appearance by Fisher as a nun and Mark Hamill as a parody of himself. Carrie's cameo was the one that got the laughs.... do you follow the good book?
      9. A lot of people forget this but Fisher appeared in the classic movie When Harry met Sally. She was the 'friend' of Sally who ended up marrying Harry’s best friend. See, there is life outside of Star Wars!
      10. Carrie Fisher wrote an actual bestselling novel Postcards from the Edge and screenplay for the film based on her writing. The book was about her drug addiction and her relationship with her mother. Fisher has managed to parlay her writing talent with a few turns at playing script doctor for a few Hollywood movies, most notably Rene Russo's Outbreak.
      11. Yoda’s species has never been mentioned. In official records he is simply an ‘unknown species’. He'll always be Kermit's ugly cousin to us.
      12. For the prequel film Attack of the Clones, Yoda was performed by Frank Oz. The next two prequels featured a CGI Yoda and the DVD release of Clones saw a CGI version replace the puppet.
      13. While many think Yoda had Darth Sidious beat in his famous duel in Revenge of the Sith, it was actually Mace Windu, a former student of Yoda who firmly beat the Sith Lord (of course Anakin came in and ruined it all..).
      14. The original drafts for Star Wars show that the Skywalker family was actually called Starkiller. Indeed the drafts featured a General Starkiller and didn’t focus on the young moisture farmer from Tatooine. His son was called Deak. He eventually became Luke.
      15. During Revenge of the Sith Bail Organa and Yoda step into the hallway of Organa's ship and have a nice coversation about becoming rebels or something. It's the same ship that Darth Vader boards to capture Princess Leia Organa in the start of A New Hope.
      16. Does the name “Annikin Starkiller” sound familiar? That's the character's original name.
      17. During the assault on the Rebels ice base on Hoth, it is Hamill who speaks the line, “the first transport is away!”. This line is later used as a reference to Star Wars in Mass Effect 3
      18. Carrie Fisher had to stand on a box for most of her scenes with Harrison Ford in the original Star Wars films because she is a foot shorter than him. This was done so the actors would look better in the frame shot together.
      19. Master Yoda is 66 cm tall. As a comparison, R2D2 stands taller at 96 cm!
      20. In the very short lived T.V. show Firefly, a model version of Han Solo frozen in carbonite can be seen in many places - the props department would move it around as a running gag. Presumably this was kind of like how Superman appeared in every episode of Seinfeld
      21. Princess Leia never actually gets to 'meet'Obi Wan Kenobi. She sees him from afar when she's escaping the Death Star and Obi Wan is about to let Darth Vader kill him but that's it. Unless you count Obi Wan being present for her birth in Revenge of the Sith...
      22. Harrison is the only actor to have appeared in films directed by all three of these directors: Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola
      23. Yoda's original name was 'Minch'.
      24. Everyone assumes Luke only appeared in the three original Star Wars films. Think about if for a moment and you’ll realise Skywalker appears a baby at the end of Revenge of the Sith. He of course appeared for 30 seconds in The Force Awakens making 5 film appearances.
      25.  following Padme Amidala giving birth to him and Leia at the medical facility on Poliss Massa.
      26. In A New Hope, Darth Vader has only 12 minutes of screen time! Talk about screen presence.
